Message From The President

President’s Message Spring 2012

Dear Members of Delta Upsilon Chapter at-Large,

Spring is on the Way!

Welcome to the new members of Delta Upsilon Chapter at-Large!  The festive induction brunch was held on December 4, 2011 at the O’Club. We look forward to seeing the new members at future programs and welcome their participation in the many activities of the Chapter. The names and photographs of the award recipients will be posted on the DU website. Bonnie Dinwoodie received the Chapter Service Award for her steadfast and expert contributions as Vice-President and Chairperson of the Program Committee.

At the fall program, Dr. Linda Pellico, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Director –Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing program at the Yale University School of Nursing gave a presentation entitled, “Looking is Not Seeing, Listening is not Hearing.”  Dr. Pellico described her innovative approach to teaching nursing using visual and auditory training to develop observational and diagnostic reasoning skills. Via Roma on Federal Hill provided a new venue for the program and business meeting. We welcome suggestions from the membership as to new venues where we can conduct meetings and programs.

Delegates Nicole Smith and Patricia Quigley represented the Chapter at the Biennial Convention of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) held in Grapevine, TX, from October 29-November 2, 2011. The Convention report was submitted to the Board of Directors and will be posted on the DU Website. Diane Gerzevitz and Patricia Quigley presented their poster entitled “Partnership to Improve Palliative Care in Romania” during a poster session at the Convention.

The Board of Directors continues to collaborate with Diane Gerzevitz and the Hospices of Hope (HoH) to support their efforts with the professional development of Romanian nurses in providing palliative care. Patricia Quigley attended the HoH Reception at the University Club in Providence to represent the Chapter. She met Graham Perolls, OBE, founder and President of HoH, Romania, who spoke of the new Bucharest Hospice Project for Adults and Children.

The Induction and Spring program will be held on April 21, 2012, at the Quonset O’Club. Inductions will be held in the spring instead of December to create more opportunities for students to participate in the Chapter before they graduate. We hope members will attend the program and welcome the inductees. Program information will be posted on the website and on Facebook. Please access these sites to stay current on DU’s activities. With increased focus on electronic communication and as a cost-effective approach, the Chapter will send less paper mailings. We welcome your feedback on this approach. Also, please keep your email and USPS addresses current on the STTI website to ensure that you receive mailings.

See you in April at the Induction when hope springs eternal with the contributions of our new members to make this Chapter the best it can be.

Patricia Quigley, President
