More than 1800 nurses from around the world met in Indianapolis, Indiana from October 31-November 4, 2009 for the 40th Biennial Convention. Attendees represented 130,000 active members from 469 Chapters in 22 countries.
The convention theme was “I am a nurse. . . I am a member of a global nursing community.”
The objectives of the convention were:
- Apply and share nursing knowledge and leadership skills in sustaining the health of the world’s people.

- Utilize new knowledge to create culturally sensitive practice.
- Examine interdisciplinary partnerships to promote the global nursing community.
20% In the opening plenary session, Carol J Huston, outgoing President of STTI, presented the four key themes of her Presidential Call to Action, which reflected the Vision 2020 goal of Leading Globally. The four themes were:
- Being intentionally global: Currently four percent of the members reside outside the US. Goal: increase to 20% of member residing outside North America.
- Building knowledge resources: Virginia Henderson Research Library is available through the website. Goal: increase funding by 60% from the last biennium.
- Developing leadership and paying attention to the newest and youngest members to recognize and develop leadership potential.
- Providing service. Encourage members to complete the Volunteer Interest Profile (VIP) on the STTI website to enable chapters to match interests of members with available volunteer opportunities.

HOUSE OF DELEGATES MEETING
Action on Bylaws
All of the proposed bylaws changes were passed by the House of Delegates
The newly adopted bylaws are:
- In odd-numbered years, the annual meeting is the reporting session of the House of Delegates.
- A member of the board of directors who demonstrates behavior, as determined by the Board of Directors, that is not consistent with the mission, values, or expectations of the honor society may be removed by a three fourths (3/4) vole of the remaining members of the board, provided that notice of the intent to take such action is given to all board members at least 30 days in advance of the regular or special meeting at which the motion to remove is introduced. Such board member shall have the right to be present and to speak on his/her behalf, but shall not be allowed to be present during deliberation nor to vote. Voting shall be by ballot, which may be delivered electronically if a face-to-face meeting is not possible,
- The rules contained in the 10th edition of the Roberts’s Rules of Order Newly Revised shall govern the Society in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not consistent with these bylaws or special rules of order of the Society.
In terms of the Functions of Board of Directors, a bylaw, which was eliminated, reads: Deciding on revocation of membership in the event that an inducting chapter no longer exists. There was not a new bylaw to replace this, as it was eliminated entirely.
Rationale: This function is no longer necessary by any group given the bylaws amendment approved by the House of Delegates in 2007 that gives any chapter to which a member belongs the right to revoke a person’s membership in Sigma Theta Tau International. A chapter to which a member belongs will always exist.
Action on Resolutions
The House of Delegates passed all of the 2009 proposed resolutions. These may be found on the STTI website. The one that generated the most discussion was Resolution #6, to “Support the Establishment of a Virtual Chapter.” The resolution was revised to state: “Resolved, that this body affirms its commitment to the establishment of virtual chapters within Sigma Theta Tau International.”
Presidential Call to Action
The 2009-2011 President of STTI, Karen Morin, RN, DSN, ANEF, integrated Vision 2020 in her Presidential Call to Action. She will address four areas for the biennium. The four areas with an example of implementation are:
- Creating Welcoming Environments: Reach outside your comfort zone by meeting 5 new people.
- Contributing to global health: Become involved in service activities that address health needs of vulnerable populations.
- Enhancing Knowledge Resources and Networks: The Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library, a free electronic knowledge repository links nurses and other health care professionals to one another.
- Creating a Legacy of Personal Leadership: Consider volunteer opportunities that exist at the chapter, regional, and international level.
The 41st Biennial Convention will be held from October 29- November 2, 2011 at the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Convention Center at Grapevine-Dallas, Texas.
Anne Carty and I enjoyed representing Delta Upsilon Chapter at-Large for the 40th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis. It was a busy, stimulating, motivating, and energizing experience. We were privileged to meet nurses from around the world and be a part of such a dynamic organization, which continues to seek ways to improve global health. That being said, we enjoyed returning to the hotel to rest, relax, and renew our energy for the next day. The implications of the revised bylaws will be discussed with the DU BoD. Strategies suggested in President Morin’s Call to Action will be considered for implementation in DU’s planning for the year.
Thank you to the Chapter for providing this professional opportunity. We welcome any questions or comments and encourage others to run for the position of Delegate. It contributes to professional growth and also meets the goal of Creating a Legacy of Personal Leadership as emphasized by President Morin.
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia Quigley, RN PhD,
