2010 Research Awards

Dr. Alicia Curtin and Dr. Karen Pounds
One of the most important activities that we perform as a Chapter, and one that is closely aligned to the overall mission of Sigma Theta Tau International is to promote knowledge generation in nursing through our support of nursing research.
Dr. Alicia Curtin and Dr. Karen Pounds received a Delta Upsilon Chapter at-Large, research awards of $1200 each. The research committee was particularly impressed with the quality of their proposals. Dr. Curtain’s study “An Individualized Skills Training Program for Persons with Mild Alzheimer ‘s Disease Living in the Community” will add to our knowledge of how to improve the functional and cognitive ability of patients with dementia. and its significance for nursing practice. Dr. Curtin brings strong research skills and clinical experience working with the aged to this project.
Dr. Karen Pounds’ study “Nurse Interaction with Individuals with Schizophrenia: The Acute Phase Experience” is an extension of her doctoral work studying communication strategies and their effect on this vulnerable population. This is very important work and we are very pleased to have research involving vulnerable populations being conducted by members of our chapter.
Congratulations Alicia and Karen. The chapter is pleased to support your work, and we look forward to hearing your results.
